about

For my Bachelor Project I developed an interactive website that helps users understand visual manipulation strategies to foster critical visual thinking.

Problem

In my bachelor thesis, I examined the effects of image manipulation on public perception. In an increasingly visual media landscape, images play a crucial role in conveying information and, due to their strong emotional impact, have a profound influence on us. Manipulated images, especially on social media, can spread misinformation and undermine trust in visual media. Scientific studies show that prebunking—proactively educating people about manipulation strategies—is one of the most effective methods against disinformation. Therefore, my goal was to create an application that sparks curiosity, is fun to use, and explains to users the manipulation strategies they encounter in everyday life.

Goal

My goal was to create an app that sparks curiosity, is fun to use, and explains to users the manipulation tactics they encounter in everyday life.

How?

The application uses abstract 3D interactions to visualize the mechanisms behind the manipulation. It employs visual, auditory, and haptic elements to make the manipulation mechanisms tangible and intuitive to experience. The topics are conveyed through 3D interactions that give users an active role and encourage them to experience the phenomena depicted. Images, sound, typography, color, and movement are used in a targeted manner. Each interaction is accompanied by a short informational text explaining the respective mechanism.
