Semester project in my Masters Studies in Human Computer Interaction for the class Physical Prototyping at the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences. The task was to come up with an everyday problem and solve that with a prototype using arduino and basic materials like cardboard.
What?
A physical Pomodoro timer featuring an integrated locking compartment that physically secures the users phone to eliminate digital distractions during focus sessions.
Why?
Digital Pomodoro apps often backfire by requiring users to pick up the very device that distracts them. I designed this hardware solution to remove the phone from the workflow entirely, using a physical barrier to help users overcome procrastination and build deep-work habits.
How?
Built with Arduino, the prototype features a rotary knob for custom time intervals and a digital display for status. Upon starting, a motorized flap locks the phone away, only reopening once the timer expires. I also integrated an emergency override to ensure accessibility in urgent situations.
